Uses of acids and bases
Acids
- Acids are found in many fruits and other foods.
- Acids also work to break down food in your stomach. For example, gastric acid is a stomach acid that helps with digestion.
- Nitric and and sulfuric acids are used to make fertilizers, dyes, paints and explosives.
Bases
- Bases are used in cleansers and cleaning products. For example, sodium hydroxide is used in oven and drain cleaners because it can convert fat into water soluble soap.
- The combination of baking soda and a weak acid results in carbon dioxide, allowing dough and batter to rise.
- Bases work to neutralize acids in your stomach. Aluminum hydroxide is used to make antacids which neutralizes acids in the stomach.
