Glossary
Alkali - a base that dissolves in water (e.g. soap)
Aqueous solution - a solution in which water is the solvent
Conjugate acid - a substance formed when a base takes on a proton
Conjugate base - a substance that remains after the acid gives up a proton
Electrolyte - a substance that dissolves in water and forms a solution that conducts an electrical current
Indicator - dye that changes color in the presence of an acid or base
Molarity - the number of moles of solute in 1 liter of solution
Neutralization - equivalent amounts of acid and base yield salt plus water
pH - a number that indicates the strength of an acid or base. A low pH indicates a strong acid and a high pH indicates a strong base.
Proton - located in the nucleus, has a positive charge
Titration - the process of adding measured volumes of an acid or base of known molarity to a base or acid of unknown molarity until neutralization occurs
